What happens when a science buff also happens to love food and people?

Anna Fakhry’s solution was to pursue a career in speech and language pathology, helping adult and child clients by assessing and addressing speech, communication, language development, swallowing and literacy challenges.

She can also prescribe technological aids to provide alternative non-verbal communication.

Anna brings extensive experience, particularly in childhood interventions, to the Melbourne Therapy Pro team.

She’s witnessed the excitement that small gains make for clients and parents.

She’s also seen and understands frustrations, fears and anger that can come with losing abilities to communicate or eat, as a result of conditions including acquired brain injury, stroke or Parkinson’s disease.

Anna’s strong interest in swallowing difficulties (otherwise known as dysphagia) is, in part, fed by her own love of food and its sociableness.

“Let’s not overlook that our ability to communicate and eat effectively impacts mental health as well,” she says.

Anna holds a Bachelor of Science in physiology and neuroscience from The University of Melbourne with post-graduate qualifications in speech and language pathology.

It’s that science bent that drives Anna to seek out the latest evidence-based practices.

“When I suggest an intervention to a client, it’s not just because it sounds good. It will have been tried, tested and proven to be effective,” she says.
