As a keen traveller (and former travel agent), Elaine Stephens has visited many countries and found herself in places and situations where she’s been misunderstood because of language difficulties.

Those times actually directed her career change to become a speech and language pathologist.

“Communication is so easily taken for granted. For me, those times when I couldn’t make myself understood were circumstantial and only for short periods, but they were frustrating all the same. Those times gave me some insight and empathy into what it must be like to live with this challenge every day,” she says.

Elaine’s work supports children and adults with speech, swallowing and communication challenges.

She can also prescribe technological aids to provide alternative non-verbal communication.

Past experience has seen Elaine in clinical and school-based environments, including assessing children and teenagers with challenging behaviours for speech and language difficulties.

She’s also supported adults who have sustained traumatic brain injury.

Elaine is an Australian Catholic University (Melbourne) graduate.
