“Being an OT allows me to empower people to recognise and celebrate their strengths, break down the barriers they face and live with purpose and meaning”

How can you support people?

I recognise that first and foremost my job is to listen. Once I know the person and what supports they may need, I seek to empower people to work toward their goals in collaboration with them.

How does your background shape the way you work?

I have provided care to a loved one and recognised the difference a caring and empathetic health professional can make for a person. I am driven to help and empower others coming from this place of compassion and care.

What is your approach to working with people?

I apply an occupational lens to each barrier a person faces, to seek to overcome it. I may do this by building their skills and self-confidence. I may also put supports in their environment or educate others in their life on how to support them. I may also problem solve an activity to figure out new ways to for the person to engage in it independently.

Emma Sarovich gained a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours, First Class) from James Cook University. She is also a Certified Floortime practitioner (Floortime is a child-led, play based approach to promote and foster regulation, connection, engagement and emotional development for children with ASD).
