Maree Smith joins Therapy Pro as an occupational therapist (OT) with a background in supporting clients to recover from mental illness and physical challenges.
For more than a decade, Maree was a personal trainer, working closely with elite professional athletes.
On realising that she got more satisfaction from seeing clients at a community gym overcome illness and physical conditions, Maree went back to university to study occupational therapy.
“Supporting an improved quality of life is what I’m really about,” Maree says.
Maree Smith brings experience in her observational skills as an OT, focusing on strength and functional mobility, upper limb therapy, pain management and emotional regulation.
She’s mindful of the importance of activities being meaningful and culturally appropriate.
She’s also keenly aware of the impact our senses play in our behaviour.
“Does an activity flow, feel fun, feel good – or have a different impact? It can be useful to tune into how doing makes you feel, and if that feeling isn’t positive, then what can be done to make it better?” Maree says.
As a Therapy Pro OT, Maree works with clients of all ages with disability, to assess and help improve daily living functions—at home, work or socially— enabling as much independence as possible, safely.
She can prescribe appropriate aids and equipment and consider minor home modifications to help improve your safe independence.
Maree Smith is a graduate of the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
