Experiencing communication or swallowing challenges can be frustrating and anxiety-provoking.

Nabeela Cassim is unusually placed to address both the speech and language pathology challenges and psychological issues that may arise from them.

Nabeela trained in both speech and language pathology and psychology and can support clients in need of either – or both – allied health therapies as part of Therapy Pro’s mobile in-home service.

“There’s actually a lot of overlap in the disciplines, and without appropriate treatment of both, you can stay in the loop of frustration and anxiety, being angry with the world and with yourself, because you can’t make yourself understood or you can’t eat or swallow as you maybe once did. I want to help you break that cycle.”

Nabeela recalls her time on an oncology ward as a ‘speechie’, working with patients who had difficulty swallowing and eating as a result of their cancer: she often counselled distressed patients.

“I had the training to help them work through their emotions effectively, there and then, without the need to refer to someone else.”

Nabeela has worked with children, adolescents and adults in community, hospital, school and private practice settings.

As a speech and language pathologist, Nabeela can assess and address challenges impacting language development, social communication, swallowing and literacy.

She can also prescribe technological aids to provide alternative non-verbal communication, from high-tech to handmade (her teenage scrapbooking phase has come in handy, she says).

As a psychologist, Nabeela is keen to support clients to better understanding their thinking and behaviour, manage stress and pain, and find positive ways to cope with life.

A dedicated learner of new things – “I’ll give anything a go!” – Nabeela is also a passionate community volunteer and mentor for young people.
