Life is music for Samantha Cotterell, who joins Therapy Pro as a psychologist (provisional) on the Gold Coast.

Sam can help child, adolescent and adult clients better understand their thinking and behaviour and improve their quality of life by, for example, better managing stress, behaviour and emotions, dealing with grief, sadness or anger, or finding positive ways to cope with life.

While Sam has the usual toolkit of therapies to choose from (like cognitive behaviour therapy, mindfulness and acceptance and commitment therapy), she may also use music as a therapeutic tool.

“Music is a primary universal language, that connects all walks of life,” Sam says.

Her past work as teacher’s aide for children with special needs and almost a decade of teaching piano to adults and children, along with professional placements in public health community clinics, carrying out psychological assessments and a range of interventions, give Sam a great grasp on individual’s different tempos.

A graduate of the University of Western Australia, Sam is now completing her Master’s in Psychology at University of Queensland with research into the positive effects of group singing for aged care.

When not creating music, Sam is often being taken for a walk by her energetic cocker spaniel Mia.
