Living and working overseas provided invaluable life lessons for Therapy Pro psychologist Sophie McNamara.

While expecting differences in culture, she learned to adapt to different ways of doing things, appreciating that no one way is the way. She also gained an appreciation of what it’s like to be unable to express yourself clearly and be understood.

Those lessons, together with her innate compassionate nature, serve Sophie well in supporting clients of all ages address psychological challenges and mental health needs.

Sophie brings to Therapy Pro practical experience working with children, teens, adults and elderly, supporting their emotional wellbeing and mental health.

She’s particularly experienced in supporting clients with complex mental health needs including psychotic conditions, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and people who have experienced trauma.

As a psychologist with Therapy Pro, Sophie carries out a range of psychological assessments, and delivers tailored therapeutic interventions.

Behaviour management, emotional regulation, stress management, coping strategies, relaxation techniques, and social skills development are just some of the areas Sophie can help you with.

She’s also big on developing life skills: “Sometimes the barriers to reaching goals can be psychological, and sometimes those barriers can be addressed by being organised, setting realistic, smaller goals and planning. Like the old saying goes ‘fail to plan, plan to fail’.”

Sophie is keen to help transitions in life for clients go more smoothly. Those transitions may range from starting school, leaving school, entering the workforce, or adjusting to permanent changes in ability due to illness or accident. ‘Transition’ may also relate to exploring gender diversity.

“I am here to support you to empower yourself to make the changes you want to make in your own life” she says.

Sophie is a University of Queensland graduate.
