At Therapy Pro, we help people across the lifespan understand thinking, learning, emotions, behaviours, and social strengths and challenges with assessments tailored to their goals.

Assessments assist in determining if there is an underlying reason for areas of concern, exploring a possible diagnosis, and providing individual tailored recommendations for support.

Who will support you?

  • Our friendly client services team will discuss your initial enquiry with you to answer questions and determine the right assessment to match your needs.
  • You may undergo the assessment with a generally registered or provisionally registered psychologist. All our psychologists are AHPRA-registered.
  • Depending on the assessment, you may also work with an occupational therapist or a speech pathologist as part of our multidisciplinary team approach.

How are assessments funded?

  • Our current assessments are fee-for-service, which means they cannot be funded by NDIS or Medicare.
  • We discuss costs upfront.
  • You do not need a referral from another professional to undertake an assessment with Therapy Pro.
  • Our team are happy to collaborate with any referrers including paediatricians, psychiatrists, doctors, or educators.

Where will your assessment take place?

We currently offer assessments across a mix of in-clinic and telehealth settings, depending on your needs and the type of assessment required. Both our Brisbane and Melbourne clinics offer the same services.

Brisbane Clinic

Face-to-face assessments are available at our Brisbane clinic with a team of psychologists and allied health professionals, experienced in working with children, teens, and adults.

Melbourne Clinic

Limited in-person appointments are available in our Melbourne clinic for selected assessment types. Our team of multidisciplinary therapists support across the life span.

Telehealth

Some assessments, particularly for adults, may be delivered online via secure telehealth. This option is dependent on the type of assessment and your individual circumstances.

What does an assessment involve?

cognitive assessment booking process - therapy pro

We understand that booking an assessment can feel like a big step. While each assessment type is different, there are some common steps you can expect when working with our multidisciplinary team.

Once we receive your enquiry form, we will reach out to confirm some more clinical details and seek to understand your concerns and goals. This will allow us to choose the right type of assessment for your needs, confirm costs, and discuss payment options. We will also go over how many sessions you require.

Assessments are completed by psychologists (registered or provisionally registered), and in some cases, may also involve our multidisciplinary team of occupational therapists and speech pathologists. Standardised assessment sessions may be 1.5 hours or longer and you may require multiple sessions depending on the number of tests required. Parents and educators may be asked to complete different tests.

Depending on the assessment, we might use games, questions, activities, or observations. We use standardised assessment tools depending on your assessment needs. We aim to create a relaxed and supportive space, especially for children. The sessions can be held at one of our assessment clinics in Brisbane or Melbourne or via telehealth.

After your sessions are complete, we will write a clear, easy-to-read report that will include the results, recommendations, and practical next steps. You’ll then be booked in for a feedback session and we will walk you through the findings, results, and any possible diagnoses.

We will guide you through whatever comes next – this may be ongoing therapy supports, additional referrals, communication with paediatricians, psychiatrists, or any other referral professional.

Your assessment reports may be used as part of the evidence required for NDIS funding, school adjustments, or other government funding.

Please note that we do not provide medico-legal assessments or court reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Once you submit an enquiry form, our team will contact you to gather clinical details, understand your goals, and recommend the right type of assessment. We’ll also explain costs, payment options, and how many sessions may be required.

Assessments are conducted by a psychologist (registered or provisionally registered) or members from our multidisciplinary team. Sessions are typically 1.5 hours or longer and may occur over multiple appointments, depending on what’s being assessed. Parents and educators may be asked to complete questionnaires or checklists as part of the process.

We use standardised assessment tools tailored to your needs. Depending on the age and goals, sessions may include games, tasks, questions, and observations. We aim to keep the environment calm and supportive — especially for children. Sessions take place at our Brisbane or Melbourne clinics or via telehealth.

After your final session, you’ll receive a clear, easy-to-understand report within 4–6 weeks. It will include results, recommendations, and any possible diagnoses. You’ll also be booked in for a feedback session to walk through the findings.

We’ll guide you through any next steps, which may include therapy, additional referrals, or collaboration with other professionals like paediatricians or psychiatrists.

Your assessment reports may be used as part of the evidence required for NDIS funding, school adjustments, or other government funding.

Please note: we do not provide court reports or medico-legal assessments.

It depends on the reason for the assessment. You may be asked about learning, behaviour, emotions, relationships, daily activities, social skills, early development, milestones, or relevant clinical history.

For children, we often include games or tasks. The aim is to understand what’s happening and how best to support the person being assessed.

Diagnostic assessments can help identify cognitive, emotional, learning, social, or behavioural strengths or weaknesses. These standard assessments can provide the evidence needed to contribute to a diagnosis. A diagnosis can help you to access services like the NDIS, help schools tailor learning plans, or guide therapy and support needs.

The NDIS does not fund diagnostic assessments on their own. You are typically required to have a diagnosis first, before you can get funding for services.

For more information, read up on our NDIS psychology services.

No. You don’t need a referral to access an assessment with us, unless you’re using a Medicare rebate. For private (fee-for-service) clients, you can self-refer by completing our online referral form.

Wait times vary based on location and availability. In most areas, assessments can begin once the invoice has been paid and typically within 4 weeks of completing your enquiry form.

Once your form is submitted, our team will contact you to confirm timeframes and next steps.

Assessments are completed by either a psychologist (registered or provisionally-registered), or members from our multidisciplinary team, such as occupational therapists or speech pathologists.

Provisional psychologists are supervised by senior clinicians that include board approved supervisors with a range of endorsements from clinical to education and developmental psychologists.

We’ll match you with the best-fit clinician based on the assessment needs.

We do not provide assessments for medico-legal, court (guardianship, custody etc), or forensic purposes. If you’re unsure whether your needs fit within our scope, please reach out and we’ll guide you in the right direction.

If our services aren’t the right fit, we can suggest alternatives. This might include your GP, school wellbeing team, local mental health services, or other assessment providers. We’re happy to help point you in the right direction.
