Frequently Asked Questions

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a document created with you and your usual medical practitioner or a GP at your MyMedicare registered practice. It outlines your mental health diagnosis, clinical goals and may include mental health measures. Having a Mental Health Treatment Plan allows you to access Medicare rebates for psychology sessions with a trained and registered Medicare provider.

Yes. You can self-refer to Medicare-funded psychology supports if you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.

Under current Medicare guidelines, people typically receive 6 psychology sessions initially under their Mental Health Treatment Plan. If required, your usual medical practitioner or a GP at your MyMedicare registered practice can approve up to 4 additional sessions, following a progress report completed by the psychologist.

At Therapy Pro, we understand that in some cases you may need more than 10 sessions.

Your psychologist can discuss additional layers of support and services throughout your treatment journey. Therapy Pro also offers ongoing sessions on a fee-for-service basis, which can be paid out of pocket if your Mental Health Treatment Plan sessions are exhausted.

Both generally registered and clinical psychologists can provide treatment under Medicare. Clinical psychologists have undertaken additional training and supervision to specialise in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of complex and severe mental health conditions. This advanced training is reflected in higher Medicare rebates and, in some services, higher session fees.
